Why the pragmatic Pete Wild could be exactly the safe pair of hands Hartlepool United need

"Perhaps not the most glamorous name in the footballing world, Wild's pragmatism could be exactly what Pools need as they look to salvage a season that seemed to promise so much but, so far at least, has delivered precious little."

The role of Hartlepool United manager has become something of a poisoned chalice in recent years.

Indeed, since promotion-winning boss Dave Challinor, who led Pools back to the Football League via a heart-stopping National League play-off final in June 2021, left to take charge of Stockport County in November of that same year, the club have had a staggering 17 different managers, head coaches and caretakers.

Of those, none have come close to matching Challinor's success; indeed, few have fared particularly well at all.

Challinor's immediate successor, former Pools defender Graeme Lee, was sacked before the end of the 2021/22 campaign despite overseeing memorable runs to the fourth round of the FA Cup, setting up a lucrative trip to Premier League Crystal Palace, as well as the semi-finals of the Football League Trophy.
