New owner Landon Smith's first permanent appointment as Hartlepool United head coach has ended in dismal failure following Lee Clark's explosive resignation.
While few fans would argue that Pools seem to be making progress off the pitch, the American will ultimately be judged by what happens on it.
Although Smith is being advised by specialist football consultancy firm Bromby and Partners, with de facto director of football Chris Maxwell making many of the day-to-day decisions, the buck stops with the businessman and investor on the other side of the Atlantic.
Despite making a favourable impression since completing his takeover of the club from controversial former owner Raj Singh, Smith made a significant mistake by appointing the outspoken Clark.
