Reiss McNally admits Hartlepool United 'haven't been good enough' following latest embarrassing FA Cup exit

"We have to show character, there's no other way around it. We're at a point now where we can't really afford to not have big characters, not have people step up."

Defender Reiss McNally admitted Hartlepool United "haven't been good enough" after Pools were dumped out of the FA Cup by National League North side Marine on Saturday.

Having never previously failed to reach the first round proper in the club's entire history, Pools have now been knocked out at the fourth qualifying round stage in each of the last four years.

For all head coach Pete Wild talked of his excitement about the prospect of a cup run in the week, Pools produced a performance that was lacklustre, ponderous and well below what might have been expected.

Although the hosts started the game well enough, with the misfiring Jack Nolan forcing a fine save from goalkeeper Jack McIntyre in the 12th minute, Pools allowed a Marine side who arrived at Victoria Park having won all of their last five games in succession to grow in confidence as the afternoon progressed.
