Lee Clark has resigned from his role as Hartlepool United head coach with immediate effect.

Clark, who was only appointed Pools head coach in May, announced his sudden and unexpected decision following Saturday's dismal 3-1 defeat at home to newly-promoted Worthing.

The 53-year-old had been on the end of increasing criticism from the fanbase, culminating in vociferous calls for his sacking as Pools were condemned to their sixth defeat in seven National League games.

Having been appointed in a bid to lead Pools back to the Football League, Clark leaves having steered Pools to just three wins from nine league matches.
