Jeff Stelling full of praise for Hartlepool United's 'brilliant' Max Merrick

"The time when he raced off his line to head the ball clear, superb. There were times when you thought he wasn't going to get there, but he always, always got there."

Hartlepool United club president Jeff Stelling has been full of praise for the "brilliant" Max Merrick.

The 20-year-old, who signed on a season-long loan deal from Premier League heavyweights Chelsea last month, has made a stellar start to his Pools career, keeping back-to-back clean sheets.

While the youngster hasn't had a whole host of saves to make, he's impressed with his composure, command of his area and confidence when coming for crosses.

Indeed, Merrick was a strong contender for the man-of-the-match award following Saturday's hard-fought 1-0 win over a spirited Aldershot Town side thanks to an extremely assured showing.
