Alex Cross 'proud' of youthful Hartlepool United side following narrow National League Cup defeat to Everton

"I'm really chuffed with the reaction of the players. They're a good group, they're a good group of lads. We've got some really good young players here. In the Middlesbrough game we didn't really show it, but I thought tonight we really did. That was a real positive."

Hartlepool United academy manager Alex Cross admitted he was "proud" of his players after a youthful Pools side were edged out by Everton's Premier League 2 team in the National League Cup on Tuesday evening.

Although an inexperienced Pools outfit were condemned to their second successive defeat in the controversial competition following Rocco Lambert's ninth minute strike, there were plenty of positives for Cross to take from a spirited showing at Victoria Park.

Having declined invitations to take part in the divisive National League Cup in each of the last two seasons, Pools opted to compete in the competition for the first time this term.
