A young Hartlepool United side suffered their second successive National League Cup defeat, losing 1-0 to Everton's under-21s on Tuesday evening.
Rocco Lambert's ninth minute goal made the difference for the visitors but there were plenty of positives for Pools to take from a spirited showing at Victoria Park.
Having been on the wrong end of a humiliating 10-0 rout at the hands of Middlesbrough's under-21s in their opening game of the much-maligned competition, Pools produced a far more coherent and competitive display against the Toffees.
Academy manager Alex Cross once again named a youthful starting XI, with Harry Conyard, Noah Gilbraith and Matthew Taylor all making their senior debuts for Pools.
