Hartlepool United made the perfect start to the new season with an hard fought opening day win over Barrow.

Any fears that the multitude of new signings would take time to gel were soon swept aside against visitors who were in the EFL last season.

Owner Landon Smith had flown in from the States for the game and the atmosphere among the crowd at a sunbathed Victoria Park was one of optimism and hope.

Lee Clark sprang a surprise pre match by preferring Liam Gibson to Max Kouogun while Barrow, who had been unbeaten in pre season, had Pools top scorer last season Alex Reid on the bench.
