Hartlepool United player ratings as Pools get the better of spirited Aldershot Town

Hartlepool United maintained their 100 per cent start to the new National League season by getting the better of a spirited Aldershot Town side on Saturday. Here's what our editor Robbie Stelling made of the Pools players following another positive afternoon in Hampshire.

Max Merrick: 8

Hardly had a save to make, but difficult to remember the last time a Pools goalkeeper commanded his area with quite the same level of courage, conviction and composure. The Chelsea loanee's positive starting position and excellent reading of the game allowed him to race off his line and beat Aldershot attackers to loose balls on several occasions, while he managed to claim, punch, catch and clear pretty much everything the Shots launched into his box. Hugely impressive, especially for a 20-year-old with such limited experience of senior football.

Jay Benn: 4

Endured a torrid first half against the lively Hakeem Sandah and it was no surprise to see him replaced at half time. Couldn't get to grips with Sandah, who was allowed to drift in from the left and drive into the Pools penalty area almost at will. As usual, Benn was full of effort and commitment but the 24-year-old looked heavy-legged and was no match for Sandah in terms of pace and running power, albeit he didn't get much help from Jack Nolan ahead of him. Tried to get forward on a handful of occasions but spooned a cross straight out of play from a promising position.
