Hartlepool United's underwhelming National League Cup campaign continued as a strong Pools team were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United's Premier League 2 side.

Having turned down an invitation to take part in the divisive competition in each of the previous two campaigns, Pools might well be regretting their decision to enter this time around.

True to his word, new head coach Pete Wild oversaw a Pools side full of experienced first team regulars but the hosts were undone by a first half brace from 17-year-old Kyran Thompson.

Jack Nolan's goal, his first in 12 games, briefly drew the home side level midway through the opening period.
