Hartlepool United recovered from a goal and a man down to beat newly-promoted Hornchurch 2-1 on Saturday, a result that moves them clear of the National League relegation zone.

Having been so, so lacklustre during last week's ignominious FA Cup exit at the hands of National League North side Marine, head coach Pete Wild read the riot act and Pools responded with a battling performance, securing back-to-back league wins for the first time since the beginning of August.

After an even opening period, 36-year-old Angelo Balanta capitalised on a rare error from Chelsea loanee Max Merrick, making his first Pools appearance since September 5, to put the visitors in front a minute after the restart.
