Lee Clark, who was only appointed in May, offered his sudden resignation in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's 3-1 loss at home to newly-promoted Worthing, his side's sixth defeat in seven games.

In unusual fashion, the former Newcastle United, Sunderland and Fulham midfielder dispensed with the usual post-match media formalities, instead gathering the assembled press together before offering his resignation, leaving club officials visibly shocked.

While Clark's decision had clearly been influenced by the reaction of a hostile home crowd, it had started to become increasingly apparent that the 53-year-old was on borrowed time at Victoria Park following a dismal run of performances and results.
