Goalkeeper: Max Merrick
The 20-year-old made his Pools debut during last week's 3-0 defeat at the hands of a well-oiled Grimsby Town side after signing on a season-long loan deal from Premier League heavyweights Chelsea. Despite shipping three goals, the youngster impressed and head coach Lee Clark hailed him as "the whole package" after the game. Would suggest he is a shoo-in to begin the campaign as Clark's number one in-between the sticks.
Right-back: Neo Eccleston
Clark looks like having to decide between Jay Benn, who made 41 appearances for Pools last term, and Neo Eccleston when it comes to selecting his right-back for next month's National League opener at home to Barrow, assuming, of course, he opts to field a flat back four. While there's not much to split them, pre-season would suggest Clark slightly favours former Huddersfield Town man Eccleston at this stage. Certainly, the energetic 22-year-old offers plenty of pace and purpose going forward.
