Club president Jeff Stelling has revealed that Dave Challinor is "absolutely, categorically" not in contention for a stunning return to Hartlepool United.
Just nine games into the National League season, Pools, who were touted as possible title contenders ahead of the campaign, are on the hunt for a new head coach following Clark's dramatic resignation on Saturday.
Clark, who was only appointed in May, announced his decision in the immediate aftermath of the 3-1 loss at home to newly-promoted Worthing, his side's sixth defeat in their last seven games.
While Pools have already been linked with the likes of Stuart Maynard, who led York City to the National League title last season, former Southend United boss Kevin Maher as well as Pete Wild, who guided Halifax Town to two play-off campaigns during a successful spell in West Yorkshire, it is no surprise that Challinor's in the name on the lips of almost all supporters.
